Toshiba's history traces back to two pioneering companies. One is Tanaka Seizo-sho, founded in 1882 by Hisashige Tanaka, known for his mechanical innovations like dolls and clocks. This company evolved into Shibaura Seisaku-sho, becoming a major manufacturer of heavy electrical equipment. The other is Hakunetsu-sha & Co., Ltd., Japan's first producer of incandescent lamps, later diversifying into consumer products and rebranding as Tokyo Denki in 1899. In 1939, these two industry leaders merged to form Tokyo Shibaura Denki (Tokyo Shibaura Electric Co., Ltd.), an integrated electric equipment manufacturer. The company gained widespread recognition as Toshiba, officially adopting the name in 1978.
